How will your Levitt AMP [Your City] Music Series reflect the essence of the Levitt AMP Grant Awards?

The Levitt Foundation strives to strengthen the social fabric of our country by bringing people together in outdoor spaces, with live music that invigorates community life. That is exactly what Music on Main (MoM) is doing for Denison. MoM lets people of diverse backgrounds come together, interact, & engage in activities. At the center of downtown, MoM is accessible and open to all which encourages community participation (watching, singing, & dancing). These goals align perfectly with the Levitt Foundation’s values of inclusivity, engagement, & accessibility through music. Each year, we make strides to improve the patron experience, improve safety, strengthen our brand, & keep up with trends (like social media screen added in 2016). Due to Levitt, we’ve been able to double our budget & attendance. Levitt’s goals align with those of the Denison & National Main Street program. We are proud to be able to provide many free activities for our citizens & guests which are highlighted by free live music each week during the summer when our lake traffic is at its height. Placemaking occurs on an everchanging & competitive playing field, & Denison’s growth makes it even more important for downtown to remain the heart of the community. Hosting artists of excellent quality & maintaining community participation allowed by another year of Levitt’s support would help solidify Denison's reputation as “Event Central” & would mean a great deal to the economic & cultural centers in Denison.

How will your town or city benefit from the Levitt AMP [Your City] Music Series?

Denison, TX, as the birthplace of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, has a rich culture and history in which the Denison residents take pride. We are also the hometown of Chesley Sullenberger who is best known for serving as Captain of US Airways Flight 1549 resulting in the Miracle on the Hudson River. We are eager to share our heritage with those attending our concerts! Denison is one of Texas’ original Arts & Culture Districts, and we take seriously the entertainment aspect of the district. Growing our Music on Main concert series into a bigger event will help to promote the businesses on historic Main Street. We would like to grow our audience base and solidify our reputation for quality, live entertainment for our visitors and the residents of this area. Our city is experiencing significant growth on our outskirts, and we feel the outdoor concerts will play an important role in keeping downtown relevant with outstanding free live music. The Levitt partnership has given Denison attention on a national stage for our downtown, and this helps bring in patrons and sponsorships four our regional audience.

Describe the site where the free concerts will be held. Explain how the Levitt AMP [Your City] Music Series will play a role in enlivening the selected public space and surrounding areas.

The site of the concert, Heritage Park, is in the center of downtown Denison making it the ideal location. Heritage Park is an open, grassy space on the corner of a busy intersection. It has plenty of room for blankets and lawn chairs, which encourages groups as well as individuals to participate in this event. The only fixed setting is the permanent stage, where the performances will happen, and the adjacent public restroom facility. The park has been developed in phases over the last few years as it replaced buildings that were lost to fire and included the loss of a firefighter life. It has memorial features throughout the park. By having a free concert series here, it not only promotes Heritage Park as an entertainment destination, but also aids DMSI's efforts to revitalize downtown. Music on Main draws people on a regular basis to downtown Denison, facilitating exposure to the businesses. Local loft and neighborhood residents may walk to the venue to enjoy a diverse musical offering. Consistent activity is an aspiration, and its greatest challenge is accommodating all the guests at larger gatherings.
